WHAT IS PHOTOTHERAPY?
The term phototherapy means the use of light to treat medical conditions. Natural sunlight has been found to be beneficial in certain skin disorders for thousands of years and UVB Phototherapy treatment works by exposing the skin to an artificial light source. These light rays have an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin.
The science behind this was discovered over the last few decades. Ultraviolet produces anti-inflammatory molecules in the skin which are good at suppressing each and inflammation. Phototherapy comprises the use of ultraviolet A and B light to treat skin disease. It has long been known that the action of the suns rays on the skin can suppress inflammation and itch.
Although the effects are not permanent, treatment can bring about excellent results which may be sustained for several months. Usually a course is given two or three times a week for between 4 and 10 weeks depending on the disease and the response to treatment.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OF PHOTOTHERAPY?
Although ultraviolet light can increase the risk of skin cancer in fair skinned or white patients (less so in patients with pigmented skin), the amount one receives during a course of medical phototherapy treatment is usually relatively low.
Consequently, the risk of skin cancer would only start to increase by a significant amount if one had undergone more than 300 sessions of photo therapy
Other side-effects of phototherapy is that it can cause sun tan. The skin will usually darken over repeated exposures. Freckling can also increase in those susceptible
In fair skinned patients, sunburn is a possibility, but in the hands of our experience nurses and physicians assistant, with the use of a special erythema dosing machine, this is usually relatively minor and not a common event
Photoaging: with repeated exposure to ultraviolet, photoaging occurred and this comprises wrinkling, sunspots and thickening of the collagen. This would not normally happen during medical phototherapy as the doses are relatively small and it would take over 300 exposures to start increasing risk significantly of this occurring.
