Eczema & Skin Rash Treatments Include:

Eczema and Skin Rashes

Skin rashes are areas of skin that have become irritated or swollen, and they typically appear as small bumps, sores, red or scaly skin, or itchy and burning skin. Some skin rashes occur suddenly, whilst others take some time to develop. There are hundreds of different types of skin rash that can occur, but some are much more common. These include; eczema, psoriasis, ring worm, hives and prickly heat.

Eczema is a long-term condition which causes the skin to become dry, red, itchy, and cracked. It is most common in children and can improve over time, although many adults find that they still have flare-ups of eczema during periods of stress.

Most rashes don’t threaten your general health in any way and can be easily treated with a topical or oral solution. However, there are some rashes that are symptoms of an underlying medical condition. We always suggest that the best course of treatment for rashes is to speak to one of our expert dermatologists who can assess, diagnose and suggest an appropriate treatment plan.

If the cause of your rash is unknown and requires further investigation, we offer patch testing which can monitor your skin’s response to up to 70 different irritants.

HOW IS ECZEMA TREATED?

Common creams used to treat eczema include emollients, soap substitutes, steroids and tacrolimus. These can be applied to the skin to manage the symptoms and reduce inflammation and itching so the skin can begin to heal.

Phototherapy works to treat eczema which has not responded to topical treatments, and uses different wavelengths of ultraviolet (UV) light to reduce itch and inflammation. Natural sunlight has been found to reduce symptoms of eczema and this treatment mimics this light and has a positive effect on the immune system.

Systemic medication is reserved for very severe or life limiting eczema. These can range from oral medications to injectable medications and include immunosuppressants which work to stop the itch associated with eczema and allow the skin to heal, reducing the risk of skin infections.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Acute eczema is red with swelling of the skin, sometimes to the point of tiny blisters or vesicles appearing. It is often symmetrically distributed. Chronic eczema that has been rubbed repeatedly might be thickened and darkened.

The key feature of eczema is that it is itchy. This can be a minor distraction or a major feature that interferes with your life and prevent sleeping, working and concentration. In children it can prevent sleep which causes unhappiness at home. The condition can cause redness and thickening of the skin which might affect one’s appearance and confidence.

There is currently no known cure for eczema, though many articles in the media suggest otherwise. Treatment is focussed on the symptoms and minimising the triggers.
