Phototherapy treatment can help to relieve inflammation associated with a range of different skin conditions, including psoriasis, acne and eczema. If your dermatologist has suggested that you might benefit from phototherapy it can help to learn a little about what to expect during the treatment.

Phototherapy Treatment Sessions

When you visit The Harley Street Dermatology Clinic for phototherapy, you will be asked to undress and wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the UV light. In most cases it is best to remove all of your clothing during the treatment, but men should keep their privates covered. Your face may also be protected if it is unaffected by the skin condition. When you are ready, you will step inside the phototherapy treatment booth. The door will be closed and the light treatment will begin. You will be surrounded by UV lights that will emit carefully selected wavelengths of light for the required amount of time. In some cases, a hand and foot unit will be used to treat a smaller area of skin if whole body treatment isn’t needed. The treatment won’t usually last more than a few minutes. You may need to return to the clinic for 15-30 treatment sessions in order to achieve the best results.

Having Phototherapy Treatment

You may experience some side effects such as redness, sunburn, dry skin, itchiness or a rash while you are undergoing phototherapy treatment. You should ask your dermatologist for advice if you are concerned.

You should also avoid anything that could make your skin more sensitive to UV light while you are being treated. You shouldn’t spend too much time in the sun, use a sunbed, apply perfumed products or skin creams unless recommended by your doctor, or change your hair style to expose more skin. You should also avoid eating carrots, citrus fruit, parsnips, parsley and celery as this can increase sun sensitivity. You should follow your dermatologist’s advice carefully in order to get the best results from phototherapy.
